Land of the Rising Sun, a weekend in Japan

And so it begins. Day 1 at the airport.

They made a point of trying as many Japanese beers as possible on this trip.

Hisayo took us down a small street in Kyoto lined with quiet, romantic restaurants along the river.

Hisayo went to university in Kyoto and worked at this restaurant. Very simple and sophisticated inside with hard wood floors, tables that sit low to the ground, natural light coming in through the windows that look out on the river. Private rooms veiled with sheer curtains.

Shape and color

A geisha in-training was out walking the street, being fanned and photographed.
I can only imagine how she must feel.

The asymmetry of this picture drives me nuts, but I love the tall pillars and the trees rising behind them, the light and the frame for the shrine. Uncle Bob told me that Japanese art/design values asymmetry...I suppose it inspired this shot.

Land is very expensive in Japan, and thus, people build up rather than out. An extreme illustration.
